Security Basics for Lawn Care Businesses
Lawn care owners run the business from a phone in a truck. Here are the few security habits that matter most.
Why a lawn care business is a target
Most lawn care businesses are small: an owner, a crew, a truck, and a phone that holds everything. Customer addresses, quotes, invoices, the business email and the Google listing all live on that phone. Scammers know the owner is busy and outside, and that a quick "yes" from the truck is easy to get.
The five habits that matter most
- Lock the phone and turn on MFA. Use a screen lock, and turn on multi-factor authentication for your business email, your payment app, your website host and your Google Business Profile. CISA calls MFA one of the simplest ways to stop account break-ins.
- Never change payment details from an email or text alone. A common trick is a "supplier" or "customer" who suddenly asks you to pay a new account. Call back on a number you already have.
- Watch for fake Google listing calls. Google's own help pages warn about callers who claim to be from Google and ask for money or codes to "verify" or "rank" your listing. Hang up; manage the listing yourself at business.google.com.
- Keep customer info small. Save what you need to do the job (name, address, phone, notes about gates or pets). Don't keep card numbers in notes or texts.
- Back up and update. Turn on automatic updates on the phone and laptop, and back up photos, quotes and invoices to a second place so a lost phone is a bad day, not a lost business.
Your website
Your website is often the first thing a new customer sees. Keep it simple and safe: HTTPS on (the padlock), a quote form that doesn't ask for more than it needs, and no plugins you never update. A plain, fast site is easier to keep safe than a big one.
A five-minute check this week
Open your phone's settings and confirm the screen lock and automatic updates are on. Then turn on MFA for your business email. That's the biggest win for the least time.
